A final inspection works only when the approved sample, measurement chart, artwork and packing instructions already define what “acceptable” means.
T-shirt quality control is not a single check at the end of production. It begins when the buyer approves measurable requirements for fabric, color, fit, construction, decoration, labels and packing. Production checks then compare the actual garments with those requirements.
This checklist is written for buyers preparing an inspection brief or reviewing a factory report. It does not set universal tolerances or defect limits. Those values should be agreed for the product, market and order before inspection.
Inspect the correct order against the latest approved tech pack and physical sample. Confirm material and shade, workmanship, measurements, decoration, labels, quantity, assortment and packing. Define critical, major and minor defects in advance. If you use AQL sampling, state the standard, inspection level, AQL values and lot definition in the inspection instruction rather than asking for a generic “AQL check.”
1. Build the inspection standard before bulk starts
An inspector cannot reconstruct the buyer’s intention from a purchase order and a product photo. Give the factory and inspector the same controlled reference set. At minimum, that means the current tech pack, graded measurement chart, bill of materials, artwork files, color references, label files, packing instructions and written sample approvals.

Use the T-shirt tech pack checklist to assemble these records. Each file should carry a version or date, and superseded files should be withdrawn from the working folder.
2. Check fabric, trims and shade before they become finished garments
Material errors become expensive after cutting. Confirm fabric identity, approved color, usable width, surface condition and any required test status before the full lay is cut. Match rib, thread and decoration materials under an agreed viewing condition. For washed or garment-dyed styles, approve the permitted shade range because variation may be part of the process.

3. Inspect the operation while correction is still possible
In-line inspection catches repeated problems before they spread through the order. Review first output from critical operations such as neck rib attachment, shoulder taping, sleeve setting, hemming, decoration and label insertion. Check bundles and size identification after cutting so mixed components do not travel down the line.

4. Inspect the finished T-shirt as a complete product

5. Make measurement results repeatable
A tolerance is meaningful only when both parties measure the same point in the same way. Define garment position, whether the fabric is relaxed, how curves are followed, whether rib is stretched, and how rounding is handled. Add diagrams for points that are easy to interpret differently.
- Condition the garment as agreed before measuring.
- Lay it flat without pulling it into shape.
- Use the same point-of-measure definitions as the graded specification.
- Record the actual result, not only “pass” or “fail.”
- Review patterns across sizes; repeated drift can matter even when individual readings sit inside tolerance.
If a wash test is part of approval, record the wash and drying procedure, the before-and-after measurements and the calculation method. Do not compare a washed garment with an unwashed specification unless the specification explicitly calls for it.
6. Define critical, major and minor defects for this product
Defect classification describes consequence, not simply visual size. A critical defect can create an unsafe or unlawful condition. A major defect can make the garment unsaleable, materially affect function or cause a likely return. A minor defect is a smaller departure that does not materially reduce normal use or saleability. The buyer should adapt examples to the product and destination market.

These are planning examples, not universal classifications. The signed inspection instruction should control the order.
7. Use AQL sampling as a lot decision, not a quality promise
ISO 2859-1:2026 specifies acceptance sampling schemes indexed by acceptance quality limit for lot-by-lot inspection. The current third edition replaced the 1999 edition and its amendments. A selected plan connects the lot size, inspection level and AQL to a sample size and acceptance/rejection numbers.
AQL inspection does not mean every garment was checked. It also does not guarantee that an accepted lot contains a particular percentage of defects. It is a sampling decision applied under a defined plan. The buyer and inspection party should agree:
- the standard and edition;
- what constitutes one lot;
- the inspection level and sampling plan;
- separate AQL values or rules for each defect class;
- how random samples are selected;
- what happens after rejection, rework or reinspection.
8. Treat assortment and packing as quality checks
A well-sewn T-shirt can still become unsaleable when it carries the wrong barcode, size sticker or carton assortment. Verify the unit, inner pack and shipping carton against the approved packing file.
- Correct style, color and size inside each pack
- Correct label, hangtag, barcode and sticker data
- Approved folding method and presentation
- Clean, undamaged packaging of the specified type
- Correct pieces per carton and assortment ratio
- Readable carton marks that match shipping documents
- Carton dimensions and gross/net weight recorded as required
- No mixed, unapproved or unidentified stock
9. Review evidence, not only the final result
An inspection report should identify the supplier, order, style, lot size, inspection date, location, sample size, reference documents and inspector. It should show actual measurement results, defect counts by class, photographs, packing findings and the plan used to reach the result.
“Pass” does not answer whether open points remain. List pending laboratory reports, missing cartons, rework, buyer waivers and deviations separately. State who is authorized to release shipment. The inspector reports findings; the commercial decision belongs to the party named in the agreement.
10. Buyer release checklist

Questions buyers ask about T-shirt inspection
Is final inspection enough for a custom T-shirt order?
Not always. Material, shade or repeated construction problems are easier to correct before the order is finished. Use risk-based material, in-line and final checks where the product requires them.
Does an AQL inspection check every T-shirt?
No. AQL inspection uses a sample selected from a defined lot. A 100% inspection is a different instruction and should be stated separately.
Who decides whether a defect is major or minor?
The buyer and supplier should agree classifications before inspection. Inspectors then apply the approved defect list and report unclear cases for a decision.
What should be measured on a basic T-shirt?
The exact list depends on the design. Common points include body length, chest width, shoulder, sleeve length, sleeve opening and bottom opening, but the tech pack should define every point and method.
Can the factory ship immediately after a passing report?
Only if the purchase agreement authorizes it. Confirm that pending tests, rework, quantity or document issues are closed and that the named buyer representative has released shipment.
